Canary Wharf. During a climb a tower crane collapsed. 3 died in the accident with a fourth narrowly escaping as he heard creaking and made it to the safety of the tower section below the external climber.
There could be a few causes... The climber could have suffered a structural failure, or the tower could have had a similar problem. The stresses on a climber are often mitigated by proper balancing of the crane. If the crane is balanced the forces on the climber are largely held to vertical loading and kept well within tolerances.

Another way to learn about safety in construction and with cranes is with my commercial website, seattletowercrane.com . I have a blog up there that is related to below the hook attachments and forklift items that can keep your crews productive and safe. Link to the blogs
